阴森得不像人间的——词源两说,「精灵之国」或「异界」:两说打架,打的只是那股寒气来自谁的地盘。 Uncanny in a not-of-this-world way — by either etymology, elf-realm or other-realm, the dread arrives from elsewhere.

Uncanny in a not-of-this-world way — by either etymology, elf-realm or other-realm, the dread arrives from elsewhere.

It surfaces in Scots around 1500; the OED’s first citation is 1508, in the court poet William Dunbar. Two respectable pedigrees compete: the older account (the OED’s) reaches back to Old English ælf-rīce — “elf-realm”; the newer case (Hall, 2007) argues for el-rīce, with el- meaning “from elsewhere” — “the other realm.” The dispute is only over jurisdiction: the elves’, or nobody-knows-whose. The second reading is the colder one.

背景the story

It served Scottish literature for centuries — assigned to witches, corpse-lights, moors; then the twentieth century saw Lovecraft adopt it, and it became the official adjective of the Cthulhu mythos — “eldritch horror” is now the name of a genre shelf. A sixteenth-century Scots word, resurrected by a New England writer of weird tales, currently resident in games, novels and subtitles everywhere.

It is the dark twin of numinous: the same shiver-from-elsewhere, routed by Otto toward awe, routed here toward dread — the holy and the horrid sharing one border.

「阴森」「诡谲」都在班上,但最好的对照是《聊斋》: 聊斋的鬼狐有人情——恐怖底下是恩怨、痴缠、因果,冤有头债有主; eldritch 的恐怖恰恰是没有人情——它不恨你,它根本不知道你是什么。 中式怪谈可以讲理,可以烧香,可以谈条件;eldritch 连语言都不通。 蒲松龄的鬼收人钱财替人消灾,洛夫克拉夫特的神翻个身,文明就没了。

阴森 (grim-dark) and 诡谲 (eerie-strange) both report for duty, but the best contrast is the Liaozhai tales: Pu Songling’s ghosts and fox spirits have human feeling — under the horror run grudges, infatuations, karma; every wrong has an author and every debt a holder. Eldritch horror is horror precisely without human feeling — it doesn’t hate you; it has no idea what you are. A Chinese ghost can be reasoned with, offered incense, cut a deal; the eldritch doesn’t share a language. Pu Songling’s ghosts take payment to lift a curse; Lovecraft’s gods roll over in their sleep and civilization ends.

词典词(MW/OED),怪谈与文学写作的常用件。 写「非人间」的光、声、几何都称手;它暗示的不是危险,是范畴外—— 恐怖片可用「阴森」,eldritch 留给那种让你怀疑物理学的场合。

A dictionary word (MW/OED), standard equipment in weird fiction and literary prose. Fits unearthly light, sound, geometry; what it signals is not danger but category violation — use 阴森 for a horror film, and save eldritch for whatever makes you doubt physics.
