词源etymology

上游是阿拉伯语 ḥuzn(悲、丧)——《古兰经》里的词。伊斯兰传统把先知 接连失去发妻与叔父的那一年,称作「悲伤之年」(ʿām al-ḥuzn)。 词随信仰入土耳其语,写成 hüzün,在博斯普鲁斯住了几百年,染上了海雾的颜色。

Upstream is Arabic ḥuzn (grief, sorrow) — a Qur’anic word. Islamic tradition names the year the Prophet lost his wife and his uncle the Year of Sorrow (ʿām al-ḥuzn). The word entered Turkish with the faith, settled as hüzün, and after centuries on the Bosphorus took on the color of sea fog.

背景the story

Pamuk shipped it abroad. Istanbul: Memories and the City (Turkish 2003, English 2005) spends a full chapter on hüzün, resting on one claim: this melancholy is communal, not private — the Ottoman Empire left, the ruins stayed in the city, and the mood became something millions hold in common. He adds the more important half-sentence: hüzün does not paralyze; the city learned to read its fall not as an endpoint but as an honorable place to start from. The Nobel came the following year, and the word entered the world’s vocabulary with him.

Nearest stands 黍离之悲 — the Book of Songs poem where a man passes the old capital, finds millet growing over the palaces, and cannot walk on. Collective sorrow before ruins had a Chinese name three thousand years ago. The difference is address: 黍离之悲 is an allusion, activated by citation, living in essays; hüzün is daily, living in the weather — Istanbullus don’t quote it, they inhabit it. 愁 is a single room; toska is Russia’s objectless ache, still one person’s business; on hüzün’s household register, the whole city is enrolled.

例句 examples
The whole waterfront carried its hüzün lightly, the way old ports carry fog. 自拟例句 our own example, not a quotation
Standing at the shut shipyard gate, he finally understood hüzün — grief with a population. 自拟例句 our own example, not a quotation
怎么用 how to use it

土耳其语常用词(土耳其语言协会词典在录),英语靠帕慕克通行。 写城市、写废墟、写「一群人共享的低气压」时用;写个人的愁,用 toska 或者干脆用「愁」。 英文语境里首次出现交代一句帕慕克,读者就有了扶手。

Everyday Turkish (in the Türk Dil Kurumu dictionary); in English it travels on Pamuk’s passport. Use it for cities, ruins, a low-pressure system shared by a crowd; for private sorrow, reach for toska or plain 愁. On first appearance in English, one clause about Pamuk gives the reader a handrail.
