光在表面上轻轻游走的样子——烛焰舔着黑暗,月色舔着水面,不烧、不灼,只是掠过。 Of light playing over a surface — flame licking at the dark, moonlight at water: not burning, only grazing.

Of light playing over a surface — flame licking at the dark, moonlight at water: not burning, only grazing. 光在表面上轻轻游走的样子——烛焰舔着黑暗,月色舔着水面,不烧、不灼,只是掠过。

词源etymology

拉丁语 lambere(舔)的现在分词 lambens → lambent。 1640 年代进入英语时就是个比喻:火焰舔物而不灼—— 光从此在英语里有了舌头。

Latin lambere (to lick), present participle lambens → lambent. It entered English in the 1640s already as a figure: flame licking without scorching — and light, in English, has had a tongue ever since.

背景the story

它先形容火——燎过表面、不留焦痕的那种;再扩到一切游走的光: 月色过水、烛影过墙、屏幕的微光过熟睡的脸。 批评家又把它借去形容才思:lambent wit——机锋掠过而不伤人, 与「烧灼型」的讽刺相对。一团火的两种教养,全在这个词里分了家。

It described fire first — the kind that plays across a surface and leaves no char; then every wandering light: moon over water, candle over wall, a screen’s glow over a sleeping face. Critics then borrowed it for wit: lambent wit — brilliance that grazes without wounding, as against the scorching kind. Two temperaments of one flame, divorced inside a single word.

中文里的邻居neighbors in chinese

中文写这种光用水路:「流光」「潋滟」「浮光掠影」——光是的、的; 拉丁语给它一条舌头,光是的。 「浮光掠影」还多一层贬义(看得浅),lambent 无此包袱。 取象之别与 mellifluous 同款:那边中文用玉、拉丁用蜜;这边中文用水、拉丁用舌。

Chinese routes this light through water: 流光 (flowing light), 潋滟 (rippling glitter), 浮光掠影 (drifting light, skimming shadows) — the light flows and floats; Latin gave it a tongue, so the light licks. 浮光掠影 also carries a demerit (superficiality) that lambent never picked up. The same split as mellifluous: there, Chinese chose jade and Latin honey; here, Chinese chooses water and Latin a tongue.

词典词(MW/OED),文学写作常客。 写火、写月色、写不伤人的机锋都合手; 它自带「轻」字,别配狠词。

A dictionary word (MW/OED), a regular in literary prose. At home on flames, moonlight and unwounding wit; it carries its own lightness — don’t harness it to heavy verbs.
