In German word-building, this longing is filed as a malady — the same instinct that put -weh (ache) into Fernweh and Heimweh.

The German Romantics of the 18th and 19th centuries made it the keyword of their whole movement: a perpetual longing for the infinite, the distant, the lost ideal — unattainable, and unattainable by its very nature. Novalis’s blue flower, sought for a lifetime, is this.
A century later C. S. Lewis recognized the “inconsolable longing” that had pierced him all his life as Sehnsucht, and in Surprised by Joy gave it the English-speaking world’s most famous description (quoted below) — he called it Joy, and said the wanting itself outranked any having.
