The Skunk Works: 143 Days in a Smelly Tent That Changed Flight Forever

There's a plane that flies faster than a bullet — about two-thirds of a mile every second — and needs more airspace to turn around than the entire state of Ohio. On its retirement flight, it went from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. in 1 hour and 5 minutes. It's called the SR-71, nicknamed "Blackbird." According to internet lore, more than 4,000 missiles were fired at it over its service life. Not one ever hit.

The company that built that plane — and a whole string of things you've probably never heard of, each one basically an engineering miracle — is called Lockheed Martin. Today, the US federal government spends roughly $50 billion a year with this one company. It isn't just the biggest defense contractor — it's the single biggest contractor of any kind the US government has. It built America's most secretive base, Area 51. It built spy satellites. It even helped accidentally create Silicon Valley.

But this story can't dodge the other half of the truth: most of what Lockheed Martin builds is weapons. Things built to fight wars, to deter enemies, to kill. A Tent, 143 Days, and a War You Couldn't Afford to Lose

In 1912, two brothers named Loughead (later respelled "Lockheed" to fix how people pronounced it) started the company flying tourists over San Francisco Bay in a single small plane. After a couple of bankruptcies and restarts, a 23-year-old engineer joined the company in 1933. His name was Clarence Johnson. As a kid, a bigger boy called him "Clara" — Johnson fought back so viciously he broke the kid's leg, and after that nobody dared call him Clarence again. They renamed him after "Kelly," a tough Irish comic-strip character — a name that turned out to fit perfectly. He went on to become arguably the greatest airplane designer who ever lived, winning aviation's "Best Picture Oscar," the Collier Trophy, twice. His first boss, Hall Hibbard, summed him up in one line: "That guy can see the air."

The real turning point came in 1943. The government gave Kelly a brutal deadline: build a jet fighter faster than Germany's Me 262 in 180 days — America was already behind in that race. Kelly handpicked 23 engineers and about 30 shop workers, rented an actual circus tent, and pitched it in the parking lot next to a plastics factory in Burbank. That's where the name "Skunk Works" comes from: an outdoor tent, next to a factory that stank, right around the time a hit comic strip called Li'l Abner featured a character who ran a backwoods moonshine still called the "skonk works." The team borrowed the joke as a nickname for themselves — and when the comic's publisher actually sued Lockheed over it, they changed the spelling to "skunk."

The result: 143 days, zero to first flight, and America's first jet fighter, the P-80 Shooting Star, was born.

Quick decode: why does fewer people mean faster, not slower? Kelly wrote 14 rules for how the Skunk Works operated, and Rule 3 pulls no punches: "The number of people having any connection with the project must be restricted in an almost vicious manner. Use a small number of good people, 10%–25% compared to the so-called normal systems." Even at its biggest, the Skunk Works was only about 50 designers and engineers plus 100 machinists. The logic is simple: the more people involved, the more the message garbles as it passes along, the more meetings pile up, the fuzzier accountability gets. A tiny handful of genuinely great people can look up from their desks and watch the thing actually being built — so a problem that looks fine on paper but turns out to be a nightmare in the shop gets caught and fixed on the spot. This is one of the roots of Silicon Valley's later obsession with small, dense teams.

Area 51: A Place to Hide Planes That Accidentally Hid UFO Stories Too

The Skunk Works' next job came from a client that technically wasn't the military at all — the CIA. The early Cold War had a very specific problem: neither the US nor the USSR knew how many nuclear weapons the other side actually had, or how advanced they were, and that uncertainty was itself dangerous. The CIA wanted a spy plane that could fly at 70,000 feet — high enough for Soviet radar to see it, but too high for their fighters and missiles to reach. Kelly's team built the U-2 in a year and a half, for a total cost of just $3.5 million.

Where do you test a plane like that? Kelly flew around the American West scouting sites and settled on a dry lakebed in Nevada — "nobody in their right mind would want to be anywhere close to where we just tested our nuclear bombs." That lakebed later got a much more famous name: Area 51. After one crash, the pilot survived wearing a spacesuit nobody outside the program had ever seen — and witnesses assumed he was an alien. The UFO rumors that followed turned out to be the best cover story the program could have asked for.

Once operational, the U-2 pulled off something huge: in 1956 it flew over the USSR and photographed it for the first time, tracked the whole way by Soviet radar that simply couldn't touch it — until May 1, 1960, when the Soviets scored the first-ever surface-to-air missile kill of an aircraft. Pilot Gary Powers was captured and put on trial.

The Blackbird: Faster Than the Missiles Meant to Stop It

After the U-2, the Skunk Works built something even crazier: the SR-71 Blackbird, cruising at Mach 3.4 — 3.4 times the speed of sound. Building it required huge amounts of titanium, and the US didn't produce enough on its own — so the government and Lockheed set up dummy companies in Europe to secretly buy titanium from the Soviet Union itself, to build a plane whose entire job was spying on the USSR. It flew so hot its skin hit 500°F, and the metal expanded so much that engineers deliberately designed in gaps between panels — which meant it leaked fuel while sitting on the ground, so Shell had to custom-blend a fuel that wouldn't ignite on the tarmac. Across its many years in service, it was never actually shot down.

A Bet With No Contract

In the 1980s, the Skunk Works pulled off its boldest gamble yet. A 36-year-old mathematician found a paper published in a Russian journal — so obscure even the Soviets hadn't realized what it was worth — and saw that its equations could shrink a plane's radar signature down to roughly the size of a ball bearing. He brought it to Ben Rich, six months into running the Skunk Works. Even Kelly, retired by then, tried to talk him out of it: "That's not an airplane, it won't generate lift; don't waste the money, missiles are the future." Ben Rich staked his career on it anyway, building a prototype with no research contract, funded internally.

The test rig was almost comically simple: a wooden model on a pole at a radar range, tested against ball bearings of shrinking size, until the smallest bearing that still registered was just 1/8 inch across — meaning the plane's radar signature was smaller than that. It became the F-117 Nighthawk, a faceted, angular shape (all 1970s compute could model were flat surfaces), and it needed computers to fly it at all just to stay stable. On the first night of the 1991 Gulf War, the F-117 flew just 1% of the missions but accounted for 40% of the targets destroyed. One pilot's comparison: "if Baghdad had been Washington, that first night we knocked out their White House, their capitol building, their Pentagon, their CIA, their FBI." The whole program stayed classified for 21 years.

The Weapons Company That Accidentally Built Silicon Valley

Beyond the Skunk Works, Lockheed had another division almost nobody's heard of, with a case for being even more consequential: LMSC, Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. Building missiles and satellites isn't a sheet-metal craft like building planes — with no pilot, everything comes down to guidance, which means radar and computing, which was Stanford's and Silicon Valley's strength, not Southern California's. In 1955, LMSC moved up to Sunnyvale, right next to Stanford, and bought 275 acres — at a time when Sunnyvale's entire population was under 10,000 people. By the mid-1960s, LMSC alone employed roughly 30,000 people, while HP, then the biggest tech company around, had just 3,000. Steve Wozniak's father moved the family there specifically to become an LMSC engineer — which is why people later joked: no Lockheed, no Woz in Silicon Valley, no Apple.

A Business With Exactly One Customer

Here's the thing about Lockheed Martin's business that's unlike almost any company you know: it has essentially one customer — the US government. Which means there's almost no real market competition at all.

Quick decode: what is "cost-plus" pricing? Imagine fixing your neighbor's ridiculously complicated computer, and nobody actually knows how many hours it'll take — so you agree in advance: whatever it costs, you'll add a small percentage on top, and that's the final price. Sounds safe, right — you can never lose money? But it also means you can only ever earn that small percentage, no matter how brilliantly or efficiently you do the job — you never get to earn more by being better or faster. Most US government defense contracts work exactly this way. It's a big part of why Lockheed Martin can post tens of billions in revenue and still only post single-digit profit margins.

The F-22 fighter is a perfect example: originally planned at 750 planes for $44 billion, it ended up at just 187 planes — yet the total program cost actually rose, to $62 billion, pushing the price to $360 million per plane. Who covers the difference? Not the company — the government, meaning taxpayers. There's a political rule baked into this business too: F-22 parts are built across 46 states, supporting about 95,000 jobs. That's not an accident. Every member of Congress wants to keep jobs in their own district and hates voting to cut them — so the more spread out a program is, the harder it becomes to ever kill.

  • The Corona spy satellite dropped its exposed film canisters from orbit on parachutes, and a C-130 cargo plane trailing a giant claw literally snagged them out of mid-air — basically a real-life claw machine.
  • Company executive Norm Augustine joked back in 1983 that "in the year 2054, the entire defense budget will purchase just one aircraft. This aircraft will have to be shared between the Air Force and the Navy 3½ days per week, except for leap year when it will be made available to the Marines for the extra day." The price curve he sketched out turned out to be eerily accurate, almost like a Moore's Law for jets.

A Question Worth Not Skipping

In 1961, as he was leaving office, President Eisenhower gave a farewell address with a warning that still gets quoted today: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

Read today, that line still lands. On one hand, you've just seen what this group of engineers was actually capable of: a jet fighter built from nothing in 143 days, a plane that was never shot down, a stealth fighter the Soviets had no idea how to counter. That's human ingenuity at close to its best. On the other hand, nearly everything those miracles produced was built to fight wars, deter enemies, or kill people. And when there's only one buyer, and every member of Congress has a real incentive to make a program "too big to cancel," who's actually making sure what gets built is what the world needs — rather than just what keeps a budget alive and a district employed?
