Foundation

In one sentence: Isaac Asimov's 1951 classic, the opening book of the Foundation series, gets a reread and a carve-out from David on the Epic Games episode — he half-jokingly maps its story of a fallen empire replaced by a scrappy upstart onto the Apple-vs-Epic fight.

Overview

Foundation began as a series of short stories and novellas Asimov published in Astounding Science Fiction between 1942 and 1944, collected into novel form by Gnome Press in 1951. Together with Foundation and Empire (1952) and Second Foundation (1953), it forms the original "Foundation Trilogy," later expanded with prequels and sequels. It's set as a galaxy-spanning empire begins its long decline: mathematician Hari Seldon, using his invented science of "psychohistory," predicts the empire's collapse and the 30,000 years of dark age that will follow — and founds a colony at the galaxy's edge, the Foundation, meant to compress that dark age down to a single millennium.

Why It's Recommended

David flags the connection as a reach up front — "more of a stretch to connect it to the current episode, but I'm going to try" — and then actually does the work, spending two real paragraphs on the theme rather than just dropping a title: the empire's decline because it "stops doing its job," gets consumed by internal politics, and loses its technological edge, only to be supplanted by the small, edge-of-galaxy Foundation that still holds the real cutting-edge knowledge (nuclear power). He maps that directly onto Apple and Epic — whoever stays technologically nimble and ahead is more likely to win. He also notes this might not be his first time carving it out on the show — "I might have had this be a carve-out years ago on Acquired, so good, it's classic" — which reads as a genuine reread and recommendation rather than a title grabbed to fill time.
