French aubade ← Old Occitan aubada ← auba (dawn) ← Latin albus (white). Trace it all the way down and the dawn song is rooted in one word: white — the first pallor before sunrise.
背景the story
Its pedigree is the troubadour tradition of medieval southern France: the alba was a genre of its own — two lovers about to part, a watchman keeping lookout, a refrain carrying the word alba. The night belongs to the lovers, the dawn to the world; the dawn song sings the handover. It is the serenade’s mirror: one sung to arrive at the window, one sung to leave the pillow.
On 23 December 1977, Larkin published “Aubade” in the TLS and turned the title inside out: his dawn holds no lover, only an insomniac staring back at death — it reportedly spoiled a fair number of Christmas dinners. One word, two faces, eight hundred years apart.

Chinese poetry stocked every part long ago: 杨柳岸,晓风残月 is an aubade’s exact scene, and the farewell act of The West Chamber is one entire aubade. What’s missing is only the genre name — Chinese wrote the dawn parting for a thousand years without opening a file for it; the Provençals wrote a few dozen and licensed the type.
