词源etymology
希腊语 alkyṓn(翠鸟)→ 拉丁语 → 14 世纪进入中古英语(写作 alcioun)。 词首那个 h 是古人附会出来的:有人把它解成 hals(海)+ kyōn, 一场古老的望文生义,被将错就错保留至今——错误本身也成了词史。
Greek alkyṓn (kingfisher) → Latin → Middle English alcioun in the late 14th century. The initial h is an ancient act of folk etymology — someone parsed it as hals (sea) + kyōn — and the mistake was kept: by now the error is part of the word’s biography.
背景the story
In the myth, Alcyone, daughter of the wind god, and her husband Ceyx are turned into kingfishers. The bird was said to nest on the open sea around the winter solstice, her father holding back the winds — seven days either side, the water dead calm. The Greeks called those fourteen days the halcyon days.
From the mid-1500s, “halcyon days” settled in English as a stretch of calm, golden weather; by now it appears almost only in the past tense — the becalmed, shining time you can see but not reach again. A mythical bird, ending up as a unit of nostalgia.
中文里的邻居neighbors in chinese
拆开来,中文都有:海面的那半是「风平浪静」,日子的那半是「岁月静好」或朴素的「太平日子」。 halcyon 的妙处在于两半共用一个词——海的平静先有,日子的平静是从那只鸟引申出来的。 另外「岁月静好」如今常带甜腻味,halcyon days 的底色却是挽歌。
Split it and Chinese has both halves: 风平浪静 for the becalmed sea, 岁月静好 or the plain 太平日子 for the becalmed life. The trick of halcyon is that one word holds both — the sea’s calm came first, the life’s calm was inherited from the bird. And where 岁月静好 now often reads saccharine, halcyon days is elegy at the base.
Those were the halcyon days of the little studio — four people, one room, nothing to lose. 自拟例句 our own example, not a quotation The lake went halcyon at dusk, flat enough to hold the whole sky without spilling. 自拟例句 our own example, not a quotation 词典词(MW/OED),正式写作可用。 halcyon days 是固定搭配,几乎自带追忆时态—— 写「当下岁月静好」用它会别扭,它是给回不去的日子准备的。
A dictionary word (MW/OED), safe in formal writing. “Halcyon days” is the set phrase, and it comes pre-loaded with the past tense — awkward for a present contentment, built for the days you can’t get back.
