词源etymology
丹麦语借自挪威语 hygge,上溯古挪威语 hyggja——本义竟是「心思、心念」。 一个词从「心里想着」慢慢走到「让人心安」,词源自己就走完了 hygge 的路。
Danish, borrowed from Norwegian hygge, back to Old Norwegian hyggja — whose sense was “thought, mind.” A word that walked from “held in mind” to “puts the mind at ease”: the etymology performs the hygge itself.
背景the story
这个挪威来的词在丹麦安家约两百年,长成了国民身份的一部分——丹麦人自己也乐于让它代言。 2016 年,一波「丹麦生活方式」出版潮把它推向英语世界,Collins 年度词评选里 它只输给了 Brexit;2017 年,OED 正式收录。
它的走红自带反讽:一个关于「小、暖、不折腾」的词,被营销成了蜡烛、毛毯和精装书的产业。 词条们负责卖货,词根那颗「心」不响。
The Norwegian import has been at home in Danish for some two hundred years, growing into a piece of national identity the Danes happily let it front. In 2016 a wave of “Danish living” publishing pushed it into English — runner-up to Brexit for Collins’s word of the year — and in 2017 the OED took it in.
Its fame carries its own irony: a word about smallness, warmth and not-fussing became an industry of candles, throws and hardcovers. The marketing does the talking; the “mind” in the root keeps quiet.
中文里的邻居neighbors in chinese
「温馨」最近,但它是形容词性的,也早被房产广告用软了。 更有肉的是两个老词:「围炉」——围炉夜话,自带人数和火光; 「热炕头」——「老婆孩子热炕头」,北方人的 hygge,连知足带小格局一并说全。 丹麦人赢在把这口暖立成了可输出的国民哲学;咱们的炕头还在自己家里。
温馨 is nearest but adjectival, and long since gone soft in real-estate copy. Two older phrases have more flesh: 围炉 — gathering around the stove for a night’s talk, headcount and firelight included; and 热炕头 — the warm brick bed of 老婆孩子热炕头, northern China’s own hygge, contentment and small horizons in one breath. The Danes’ edge was to erect the warmth into an exportable national philosophy; our 炕头 still stays home.
The cabin had no wifi and one lamp, which is to say it was optimized for hygge. 自拟例句 our own example, not a quotation November is unlivable without hygge protocols — wool socks, open oven door, someone else's laughter in the next chair. 自拟例句 our own example, not a quotation OED 已收(2017),英文里可不斜体直接用;名词为主,也当形容词(hygge evening)。 写作里防甜腻——它最好的用法带一点自嘲,像丹麦人自己那样。
In the OED (2017) — no italics needed; mostly a noun, serviceable as a modifier (a hygge evening). Guard against treacle: its best register carries a little self-mockery, the way the Danes themselves use it.
