Latin mel (honey; genitive mellis) + fluere (to flow) — “flowing with honey.” In English since the early 15th century. The word demonstrates itself: four syllables strung without one sharp corner, a spoonful of honey by the time you finish saying it.

它属于英语里一小类自证词：形容什么，自己就是什么（susurrus 是另一位）。 几百年来它的岗位没挪过窝：嗓音、琴声、口才——一切以「顺滑」取胜的声音。

小心它的背面：从「圆润」到「油滑」只有半步。 英语作家用它夸播音员，也用它损政客——蜜太多的地方，读者自会起疑。

It belongs to English’s small guild of self-performing words — words that are what they describe (susurrus holds another chair). For centuries its post has not moved: voices, strings, eloquence — every sound that wins by smoothness.

Mind its reverse face: from mellow to oily is half a step. English writers use it to praise broadcasters and to knife politicians — where there is too much honey, readers grow suspicious.

Chinese stocks voice-praise generously: 珠圆玉润 reaches for pearls and jade, 余音绕梁 for the lingering rafter-echo, 莺声燕语 for orioles. All fine — but each picks a different sense: where Chinese hears jade, beams and birds, Latin smells honey. The direction of the synesthesia is the culture’s palate: one made good sound tactile and visual, the other made it a taste.
