Serendip 是斯里兰卡的古称（波斯语），出自波斯故事《赛伦迪普三王子》—— 三位王子一路上总能「靠意外与聪明」发现本不曾寻找的东西。 沃波尔取地名加上 -ity，一个国家变成了一种运气。
Serendip is the old Persian name for Sri Lanka, out of the tale of The Three Princes of Serendip, who kept discovering, “by accidents and sagacity,” things they were not looking for. Walpole took the place-name and added -ity: a country became a kind of luck.

On 28 January 1754, Horace Walpole coined it mid-letter to the diplomat Horace Mann (quoted below), grading his own work: “a very expressive word.” An improvisation in private correspondence that became, two centuries on, the working vocabulary of laboratories, bookshops and love stories — and, by reputation, one of the hardest English words to translate.
Half the point is routinely dropped: it is not mere chance but chance plus the wit to recognize it — the sagacity half. Luck knocks often; few hear it.
