词源etymology
两个来源拼在一起：德语的 sonder-（特别的、独有的）与法语的 sonder（测深——航海时把铅锤沉进水里量深浅）。 造词人要的是后面这个意象：把探锤放进另一个人生命的深处，才知道那里同样深不见底。
Two sources spliced together: German sonder- (“special, set apart”) and French sonder (“to sound” — to lower a lead line into deep water). It is the second image the coiner wanted: drop a sounding line into another person’s life, and find it just as deep.

出自 John Koenig 的《晦涩悲伤词典》（The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows）——他从 2009 年开始写的一个网志， 专门给「确实存在、却还没有名字的情绪」造词，2021 年由 Simon & Schuster 出版成书。sonder 的原帖发布于 2012 年 11 月。
它是其中传播最广的一个：跳出网志，进了日常口语、歌名、纹身。但十几年过去，主流词典至今没有收它。 一个被无数人使用、却仍然「不存在」的词——它自己的处境，某种程度上就是它的词义。
From John Koenig’s The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows — a blog he began in 2009 to coin words for feelings that exist but have no name, published as a book by Simon & Schuster in 2021. The original post went up in November 2012.
sonder became the project’s most travelled word: it left the blog for everyday speech, song titles, tattoos. Yet a decade on, no major dictionary has admitted it. A word used by thousands that still, officially, doesn’t exist — its predicament is very nearly its own definition.

Zhuangzi’s 子非鱼 (“you are not the fish — how would you know its joy?”) asks the reverse side of the same question: you cannot enter another person’s inner world. sonder concedes the point and keeps the wonder: that world is real, and just as vast.
