词源etymology

把 myopia(近视)、presbyopia(老花)一类词的眼科词尾 -opia(希腊语 ōps,眼)单拎出来, 让它独立成词——一整类「看」的词尾,成了「看」本身。

The ophthalmic suffix -opia (Greek ōps, eye) — of myopia, presbyopia and their kind — set loose as a word of its own: the tail-end of a whole family of “seeing” words, promoted to the seeing itself.

背景the story

《晦涩悲伤词典》原帖发布于 2012 年 12 月。定义本身(见下方引文)就值得抄一遍: 门上的孔洞,里面站着人,你却分不清自己在往里看还是往外看。

眼神接触是人类最短的距离,这个词给那三秒钟起了名。词典未收。

The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows post ran in December 2012. The definition itself (quoted below) deserves copying out: a hole in a door, someone standing there, and you unable to tell whether you are looking in or looking out.

Eye contact is the shortest distance between people; this word names those three seconds. Not in any dictionary.

中文里的邻居neighbors in chinese

中文把动作说得很全:「对视」「四目相对」,网络上还有「眼神拉扯」。 可这些都站在动作那一侧;opia 是给那股强度起的名—— 「他看了我一眼」和「被他看了一眼」之间隔着的东西。

Chinese covers the action thoroughly — 对视, 四目相对, and the internet’s 眼神拉扯. But they all stand on the action’s side; opia names the voltage — the thing that sits between “he glanced at me” and “I was seen.”

引文 / 例句 quotations / examples
The ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable — their pupils glittering, bottomless and opaque — as if you were peering through a hole in the door of a house, able to tell that there's someone standing there, but unable to tell if you're looking in or looking out. 与人对视时那股暧昧的强度——既像冒犯,又像暴露;那双瞳孔闪着光,深不见底又不透光——仿佛你正从一扇门上的孔洞往里看,看得出里面站着一个人,却分不清自己是在往里看,还是在往外看。(中译) John Koenig John Koenig · The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows · 2012
