词源etymology
海因莱因 1961 年科幻小说《异乡异客》里的火星语,本义「饮」。 火星缺水,饮水近于圣事:两个存在共饮一水、彼此交融, 「懂得」一件事就是把它喝进身体。一个被发明的词,自带一整套发明的神学。
Martian, from Heinlein’s 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land; its literal sense is “to drink.” Mars is dry, so drinking verges on sacrament: two beings share water and merge — to understand a thing is to drink it into the body. An invented word shipping with its own invented theology.
背景the story
小说出版后,这个词被 1960 年代的反文化与后来的程序员文化先后领养—— 「Do you grok it?」成了行话。最终 OED 收编,释义为 「凭直觉或共情而理解;建立心领神会的默契」。
它与 quixotic 同线:小说造词转正。也是这个匣子里唯一的动词—— 六十多个名词形容词之间,一个表示「懂」的动作。
After publication the word was adopted twice over — by the sixties counterculture, then by programmer culture (“Do you grok it?” became shop-talk) — until the OED took it in, glossing it as “to understand intuitively or by empathy, to establish rapport with.”
It runs on the quixotic line: novel-born, dictionary-hired. It is also this box’s only verb — among sixty-odd nouns and adjectives, one word for the act of understanding.

禅宗早备好了对座:「悟」——不立文字,直指人心;懂不是推理的终点,是身心的换态。 「心领神会」是双人版,「融会贯通」是学问版,「吃透」是干部版—— 妙在「吃透」与 grok 都走了消化道:中文「吃透文件」,火星语「饮尽其意」, 两种语言不约而同,把「懂」交给了肠胃。
Chan Buddhism keeps the facing seat: 悟 — wordless, mind-to-mind; understanding not as a conclusion but as a change of state. 心领神会 is the two-person edition, 融会贯通 the scholar’s, 吃透 the cadre’s — and 吃透 (“eat it through”) walks the same digestive tract as grok: Chinese eats the document through, Martian drinks the meaning dry. Two languages, unconsulted, both handed understanding to the gut.

In the OED, but registered to tech circles and American casual speech — use sparingly in formal prose; in engineering blogs it is a passport. For paragraphs about real versus nominal understanding, it draws the line ready-made: to learn is to have studied; to grok is to have swallowed.
