明治时代的文字游戏：積んでおく（tsunde-oku，堆着搁那儿）里的「oku」， 被偷换成了「doku」（読，读）——堆着=读了。 一个动词短语被拧成名词，讽刺全在那半个音节里。

By Mori Senzō’s account, the phrase “tsundoku sensei” was in use by 1879 — for the teacher with a wall of books and no page turned. A joke from a hundred and forty years ago reached its golden age in the era of e-commerce and flash sales: slang by birth, absent from most kokugo dictionaries, yet repeatedly introduced by the BBC and company as the Japanese word English needs most.
Its mercy is that it declines to convict: in this word, the unread pile is not a charge but a named condition — and a named condition can be lived with, respectably.
