An anecdote from Book 35 of Pliny the Elder’s Natural History: the painter Apelles hung his new work and hid behind it to listen. A cobbler noted a missing strap-loop on a painted sandal; Apelles fixed it overnight. Next day the cobbler, emboldened, started on the figure’s thigh — and from behind the panel came the verdict: cobbler, judge no higher than the sandal — set in Latin for posterity as ne sutor ultra crepidam. Ultra (beyond) + crepida (sandal) + -arian: the sort who goes beyond the sole.

Hazlitt forged the anecdote into an English word — and made it to measure: his famous 1819 letter of invective targeted William Gifford, editor of the Quarterly Review, who had been a cobbler’s apprentice in his youth. The charge was judging beyond his competence, delivered through the founding legend of his own old trade. One insult, a two-thousand-year fuse, one man’s shoe size. The letter is remembered among the finest invective in the language.
